SPECIAL GUEST TEACHERS at AYVIC

A Formal Introduction to Sachiko Walton

Sachiko started practicing yoga with Harmony in Calgary 8 years ago. In 2005, she traveled to India and spent time practicing in Mysore under the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois & R. Sharath Jois. She also attended her first 'teacher training course' in 2005 at Yoga Thailand, where she was introduced to the practice of Pranayama and Sri O.P Tiwari. Sachiko has traveled and practiced with many senior certified and authorized Ashtanga Yoga Teachers from all over the world. She began teaching Ashtanga Yoga in 2005, and has taught classes in various cities throughout Western Canada.

We are super happy that she is here living in Victoria, and that she will be teaching the Mysore classes while we are in India studying!

A BIG Congratulations to Nikki & Michelle!

A Big Welcome Home to Nikki & Michelle Pichert who have just returned from their second extended trip of study in Mysore!

We want to share with you their exciting News, so that you too can give them a huge Congratulations on receiving R. Sharath Jois’ official blessing and 'authorization' as teachers in the lineage of Ashtanga Yoga as disseminated by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois!

As well, they will be assisting us during the month of May, and teaching along with Sachiko for the six weeks we will be away.

Thanks Girls! It's great to have you home, and have you joining the AYVic Teaching Team!

HEALTH AND NUTRITION

Water - The Source of Life!

Summer is almost here... So be sure to watch your Hydration levels! It is recommended to drink 1 to 2 liters of water per day.

You will be amazed at some of the benefits of staying hydrated by drinking water!

Lose Weight: Drinking water can help you lose weight because it flushes down the by-products of fat breakdown. Drinking water also reduces hunger, and can work to increase your metabolism.

Reduce Headaches & Back Pain: If you get frequent headaches, you may be dehydrated! Water can help to relieve headaches and back pains due to dehydration.

You can look Younger and have Healthier Skin: When your skin is properly hydrated, it just looks younger and healthier. Water helps to replenish skin tissues, moisturizes, and increase elasticity.

You will be More Productive: Did you know that your brain is mostly made up of water? It's True! Thus, drinking water can actually help you think better, be more alert, and concentrate better.

The Fuel for Exercise: Drinking water regulates your body temperature. You’ll feel more energetic when doing exercises, and water helps to fuel your muscle.

Aids Digestion and Eliminates Constipation: Drinking water raises your metabolism because it helps in digestion. Fiber and water go hand in hand regulating bowel movements.

You will experience Less Muscle Cramps and Strain: Proper hydration helps keep your joints and muscles lubricated, so you’ll less likely get cramps and strains.

Feel Healthier: Drinking plenty of water helps fight against flu and other ailments like kidney stones and heart attack. Water with lemon is used for ailments like respiratory disease, intestinal problems, rheumatism, and arthritis etc.

In other words, one of the benefits of drinking more water is that it can help to improve our immune system.

Reduces Fatigue: Water is used by the body to help flush out toxins and waste products. If your body lacks of water, your organs have to work harder, which makes you feel more fatigued.

Improve Your Mood: When your body feels better, everything feels better, which means you are happier!

Reduce the Risk of Cancer: Relating to the digestive system, some studies have shown that drinking a healthy amount of water may reduce the risks of bladder and colon cancer.

Inspiration from the Masters:

“There are three types of disease: body disease, mind disease, and nervous system disease. When the mind is diseased, the whole body is diseased. The yoga scriptures say "Manayeva manushanam karanam bandha mokshayoho," the mind is the cause of both bondage and liberation. If the mind is sick and sad, the whole body gets sick, and all is finished. So first you must give medicine to the mind. Mind Medicine - That Is Yoga.”

~Sri K. Pattabhi Jois~

This quote was taken from an interview given by Guruji in New York during his first visit in 1994.
