Becoming A Yoga Teacher
After a few years of consistent practice, many sincere students consider becoming a Yoga Teacher. Wanting to share your passion and love for the practice of yoga is a natural response for any student that has experienced the deep and profound benefits that come from a dedicated Yoga practice. However, becoming a Yoga Teacher requires ongoing and in-depth personal study. The most important step is the first one: to become firmly established in your own practice of Yoga.
Patañjali’s Yoga Sutras state that the mind becomes still only when the disciplines of practice and non-dependence are firmly established over a long period of time.Yoga Sutra 1:12: Abhyāsa vairāgyābyām tannirodhaḥ "The mind becomes stilled through both practice and non-attachment." Yoga Sutra 1:14: Sa tu dirgha kāla nairantarya satkāraasevito-drdhabhuumihi “Practice becomes firmly established when it has been cultivated uninterruptedly and with devotion over a prolonged period of time.”
Although most of us have entered the field of Yoga through the physical aspect, Yoga itself encompasses so much more then simply bending and twisting your body into different shapes and positions. It is a philosophy of living that has spanned thousands of years. Becoming a Yoga Teacher is not a decision to be taken lightly. It requires a great deal of commitment, a willingness to look within, the courage to face your hidden fears, and a deep desire for personal transformation. To effectively share this ancient discipline, one must have an integrated understanding of its many elements, compassion in helping others, and an extraordinary degree of humility. Ashtanga Yoga Victoria offers several courses to help deepen your practice and broaden your understanding of Yoga as you grow and study.
It must be noted that no schools outside of the KPJAYI in Mysore, India, can officially award “teacher-training certificates” in the traditional Ashtanga Yoga System of Sri K. Pattahbi Jois. When asked about teacher trainings, Sri K. Pattahbi Jois would frequently say, “There are no teacher trainings, only students trainings.” Currently, his grandson R. Sharath Jois, Director of KPJAYI, is the only authority worldwide who may grant students an official teaching credential. We all must continually recommit ourselves to becoming the best students we can. Only then can true growth occur.
It with deep devotion to Īśvara, and to this lineage of Ashtanga Yoga, that we humbly offer in-depth Student Training Programs here in beautiful Victoria, BC.We are eternally grateful to our teachers, the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Sri O.P. Tiwari, and Sri R. Sharath Jois, for their guidance.
